1. Go through a discovery period where you can become curious. True discovery will happen when you think you are in over your head! This leads to connect with your passion and allows you to look to others to better understand how to do what you want to be doing!
2. Get a mentor who is in the field you want to be in. Experience and education are the keys to success even during difficult times. Find a mentor who wants to invest in you and you will find both.

Bestselling author, Joe Calloway was our guest on Change Your Life Radio last week and provided some great perspective about how companies should position themselves, the philosophies that drive him and what he does, and the reality of the recession and how it has impacted all levels of business.
When asked about the economy, Joe stated, “I'm helping companies position for success as we come out of the recession and into recovery. This notion of refusing to participate in the recession really should be examined. I advised all of my clients that the recession was 100% real, that it changed everything, and that recessions ALWAYS create incredible opportunities for those people and companies that were smart enough to take advantage of it. I TOTALLY participated in the recession as I used it as an opportunity to reposition my business within the industry.”

In week 12 of Change Your Life Radio we focused on selling your dream and services to others. Clay Walker, stated in his song that he was going to do his dreaming with his eyes wide open and we couldn’t agree more. Below are the steps Coach Burt discussed on the show:
- Find enlightened people. Enlightened people are those that understand what your dream is and see the value in your services. Don’t waste your time selling your dream to people that don’t understand your value. It’s a waste of your time and theirs. This process begins with finding Enlightened People.
- Turn people on vs. Turn people off. Once enlightened people are identified the focus should be shifted to getting people to “open up their dreamer!” You will know you are on the right track when you get others to understand the importance of minimizing regret. Coach will often say, “We far regret the things we didn’t do rather than the things we did.” Ask yourself this question, “If we couldn’t fail what would I do?” We call this a Unique Perspective.
- Lose yourself in the dreams of others. I have heard coach say many times, “you get out of it, what you put into it.” Taking this approach will lead to you having a group of Vested Partners that will support you and your dreams no matter what the cost.
- Have “mini-victories” and track your progress. People believe in results. Sometimes we have to make believers of ourselves as well. Having a “mini-victory” will help you show others that the dream can become a reality. Decide what those many victories are and set timelines to achieve them. Tell your closest friend, your spouse or even someone you don’t know! The stranger might hold you even more accountable.
- Make believers through action. All dreamers are not achievers, but all achievers are dreamers. What started as a writing exercise on the beach at Destin turned into his first book and is a journey that continues today. The first thing Coach Burt did was dream of writing his own book.

Coach Burt's 5 Step Plan to Fail with Style
1. Replace the question “why me?” with “what is this trying to teach me?”
2. Ask the question, “what did I contribute to end up where I am?”
3. Get stable. Stability provides us with a chance to take a better perspective.
4. Get help. As you have heard coach say ,”everybody needs a coach in life.”
5. Get busy. Start to focus on the things that you can correct in order to change your life!

I had a class along my doctoral journey in bias, assumption, and prejudice. At first I couldn't understand what this class had to do with learning about leadership and management. As it turns out it had everything to do with the journey. To motivate (move) people in a direction you must first understand basic human nature. This begins by understanding the four parts of our nature. We must also understand that EVERY person brings their own assumptions, pre-judgements, and biases to every equation based on their individual lens through which they see the world. Each person you interact with daily is the sum total of their experiences and scripting so until you understand the why behind the action of others you'll very seldom understand the what of their true motives.
Thoreau said, "For every thousand hacking at the leaves of a problem there is one hacking at the root." Many times the way you see the problem or challenge with another is the problem.

The largest gap in America is the gap between thinking of what you should do with your life and actually doing it. In sports we called this gap slippage. Slippage represented the gap between what a player knew to do "in the game" vs. what they actually did "in the game." Well, you've got a game and it's the game of life.
Here are some key drivers to close the execution gaps in your life and in your organization:
1. Realize that between stimulus (a thought) and response (your action) is a space and in that space lies your ability to choose your response. You close this gap by becoming self-disciplined (disciple of) to the picture you see in your head.
2. Many people don't act because they have too many priorities. Remember, the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing (Covey). The main thing in business is to get and keep customers. The main thing in your life is to manifest your dreams to realities.
3. Find your greatest frustration and REMOVE it. Most likely this frustration is keeping you from achieving what you want to be, do, and have in your life. It could be a number of things but common roadblocks are fear, tiny thinking, opinions of others, limited resources, or just plain laziness.
You'll begin to close the gaps in your life when there are one of two things that happen: too much pain, or too much potential.

I'm riding back from a short mini-retirement in Florida in a torrential down pour and thought this might be a good time to discuss our week 9 challenge of "playing at a different level in life." This concept really defines exactly what I do for people by helping them dive deeper into their potential through ongoing and systematic coaching that challenges them to break through their current ceilings of success.
Jim Rohn said that you can be fine or super fine in life and that the choice was yours. So how do you play at a different level in life?
1. Learn to play up with those you play with. Lose the tiny thinkers and naysayers quickly in your life.
2. Understand that every action you take is driven by the thoughts you have which are scripted by what you feed into your mind. Upload lots of wiser people into your life.
3. Realize "What got you here won't get you there." You'll have to let go of some of your past success to move to a new level.
4. This is simple: Get a coach who can challenge you.

Dr. Wayne Dyer once said, "Our greatest gift is the gift of our imagination." Nothing happens in your life until it is imagined. All things are created twice, first mentally then physically, so your ability to see a bigger future is the starting point for creating a bigger future for you.
Last week I was interviewed and asked what limits people from living a remarkable life or playing at a different level in their life and I said one thing; their own tiny thinking.

First, let me start by saying thank you to the close to 400 coaches at the Final Four who came to hear me speak. I think we all should be very intentional about who we learn from and what we learn. The first step is to make a conscious decision to get better and find great teachers through ongoing growth. This begins by becoming humble and teachable.
This week we take a look at service. Covey, my favorite author, said, "Service is the rent we pay to live on this earth." When we think about other countries it's hard not to fully appreciate the opportunities we have. Two thousand years ahead will offer both opportunity and struggle for all of us. How can we take service to a new level this week?
1. Do one thing (or more) each day to make someone's life better.
2. Do one thing each day not in your job description that could help out a co-worker.
3. Ask the good Lord each morning to "send you" to help somebody else. Asking to be the carrier of good news helps to expand your territory.
I don't know about you but service to another brings me great pleasure. Try to find as many of these moments this week that you can.
